The Lunar New Year is one of the most beloved festivals in Chinese culture, with roots that date back over 3500 years. This ancient tradition is celebrated in a variety of ways on our island, with the River Hongbao being one of the most iconic.

The River Hongbao has been on Singapore’s festive calendar every year since 1987. Held at NS Square (the Marina Bay floating platform) this iconic event has become an integral tradition of Singapore’s Lunar New Year celebrations for locals and tourists alike.

This lively festival offers a special Chinese cultural experience–from giant lanterns to mouth-watering food–that is a feast for your senses.

Epic experiences

In Chinese custom, The New Year is closely tied to the Lunar New Year, and the myth of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. This year’s celebration marks the start of the year of the Rat, the animal that marks the start of a new 12-year cycle. 2020’s event will span 10 days from 23rd January to 1st February.

Visitors to the celebration will be astounded by the larger-than-life lanterns depicting figures of Chinese myth and legend, handcrafted onsite by craftsmen from China. Crowd favourites include the God of Fortune, and of course, the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

Wide shot of caishen which is a mythological figure worshipped in the Chinese folk religion and Taoism.

Myriad activities—ranging from amusement rides to carnival games—will ensure that there is never a dull moment, and performances from international and local troupes can be expected on a nightly basis. Crowd favourites include the God of Fortune, and of course, the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

For all tastes

Keep an eye on the sky for displays of fireworks, which will be happening everyday of the festival. This year’s festival boasts four distinct styles of fireworks, made by companies hailing from all across the world.

Head down to NS Square (Marina Bay floating platform) to catch this unforgettable extravaganza, which takes place against the magnificent Marina Bay skyline.
